A Modern Rise

The challenge that came with this garden was enormous: the steep slope which extended from the rear boundary to the proximity of the house was making the space unusable, with barely a flat spot around the house to use as a seating area. Furthermore, an odd and out of place pond was taking up more usable space and creating an impression of untidiness and inconsistency with the house. The thought-provoking brief was therefore to invent and produce a usable and modern garden with uncluttered ‘open’ space reflecting the open plan design already adopted in the interior of the house.

The design process and construction work was a remarkable task which produced a ‘wow factor’ garden with a dramatic and clean layout appreciated from multiple view points, both from the house and garden itself.

The professionally drawn scheme evoked a minimalist composition which evolved in complexity through carefully planned areas incorporating interest at different level.

Over 200 tons of soil were dug out and taken away from the back garden during several weeks work of garden clearance. Particular care was taken to preserve and work around a row of impressively mature poplar trees.

Landscape construction started with the building of a series of structural reinforced retaining walls, rendered and completed with sleek black basalt coping. Steps and flat areas were then superimposed, creating a practical and usable garden, with lawn areas and paved seating platforms for enjoyment and relaxation.

The care and attention to the sense of the place is revealed in every original detail and choice of materials. The granite paving sets off the white walls and complements the dark basalt; the overhanging steps sides interrupt the vertical walls and create basalt shelves to support potted Buxus balls. These turn into a feature even at night thanks to uplighters cleverly concealed. The skilfully landscaped garden also includes the specially made to measure steel and rye-coated glass railings which form an aesthetic and coherent safety barrier.

The planting accompanies the pure and clean layout with a simple and consistent choice of mainly evergreen shrubs to raise and lift the hard landscape elements: yew and box hedges help to structure and divide the garden in usable rooms, and ball shape topiary enhance the geometric and sharp lines of steps and walls.

Our skilled maintenance team keeps the garden in pristine shape and sustains the vision behind this superb design and landscape creation.
