A Family Garden

BALI National Landscapes Awards Winner 2006The brief for this large garden was to transform an overgrown outdoor space into a family friendly haven.

In the redesign of the garden a clever use of bricks and wooden sleepers retaining walls has helped to make the space feel larger and more usable. A level turfed area was designed to replace the uneven existing lawn, making it usable for children’s games and along with a gentle curved shape easier to maintain. These flowing curves created from the change from lawn to flower bed and hard landscape surfaces has also helped to extend the perceived space of the garden.

A smooth contrast between the different elements of the garden provides a relaxed journey from the more ornamental frontage to the children barked play area, through the woodland walk to the service area at the rear of the garden.

The clearance and opening of the new garden space produced a huge amount of green waste and earth which had to be moved through the house. Also many materials were brought in with a constant and respectful attention to the customer’s property causing the least possible disruption to the family life.

In key positions closer to the house tall reclaimed brick walls and brick steps with stone treads were built. Further up the garden more rustic retaining walls and steps were constructed in wood by our Award Winning landscaping team. The use of stained softwood railway sleepers enhanced the woodland feel..

The planting complemented and enhanced the garden creation with slender bamboo and other selected shrubs to provide secluded areas, interesting textures to draw the eyes around, cool colours to create a sense of depth and elegant birches trunks to punctuate and lighten up the woodland walk. A rich composition of textures and foliage colours was skilfully designed reflecting the shady woodland habitat and working with the existing environment to achieve an award winning scheme.

The result of the garden design and build is one of soothing and calming atmosphere that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

I looked at many different Garden companies both large and small before choosing Capital Gardens. They seemed to strike the right balance between offering a personalised service but with the resources of a well established company. Plus the quote was very reasonable for the amount of work involved. They project managed the whole landscaping process from producing the initial design through to completion.

My brief was to turn our overgrown, not at all family friendly garden into an oasis for children with a large barked play area at the back and a pretty garden frontage as well as a good sized piece of lawn for ball games and other activities in the middle. The task was huge!

The amount of garden waste, huge bushes, trees and earth that had to be brought through the house and the tonnes of bark that had to be carried out to the garden was enough to fill many skips. The team worked tirelessly through torrential rain and muddy conditions. They were extremely respectful of our home at all times and at the end of the day would tidy, sweep and mop!

The staff were also very talented and could seemingly turn their hand to anything from creating gazebos with added swings and bespoke wooden compost containers to putting up unwieldy trampolines and huge playhouses! Whilst we kept to the design plan they were also flexible enough to discuss my sometimes changing requirements along the way for example the addition of trellis over the shed to provide extra privacy. Together we worked out solutions to any unforeseen issues that arose.

Finally, we discussed the planting at the front and whilst I do not have much knowledge of plants they managed to select and arrange the type of foliage and colours that I wanted. It looked even better than I had imagined!

Our two boys and their friends have used the garden every day (when not raining) and we get so much pleasure from looking out on our now beautiful space. Friends and family have been shocked at the transformation. Nobody anticipated how large and lovely the garden would look at the end of it all.

I can recommend Capital Gardens wholeheartedly.
