An Urban Oasis
The previous owner of the property had left behind a wooden deck which had been painted blue in order to soften it along with baby blue painted retaining walls to complete the scheme.
Starting from the customer input, a design brief was agreed .This was based around the creation of raised beds to divide the garden into ‘rooms’. Slate was chosen to provide a link between the garden and the interior of the house to create that special ‘indoor-outdoor feel’ and to evoke the Cornish landscape beloved by the customer.
Landscaping works commenced with the garden clearance; additional excavation had to be carried out because of an unforeseen extra layer of waste material laid underneath the deck. Again the greatest effort was paid in trying to adhere as much as possible to the original estimate.
An important clause of the landscape contract was that all the spoil and materials were to be taken through the basement where the customer ran her business. Therefore all the noisy tasks of garden clearance, rubbish removal and construction were coordinated around the client needs. Time constraints were also set when the contract was signed, these were successfully met through the hard work and unrelenting efforts of the Capital Gardens landscape team.
The slate was skilfully utilised by our professional team to clad the retaining walls, creating a sense of unity and harmony throughout the outdoor space. The planting areas were left ready for the customer to have her input in choosing and arranging her choice of plants to her taste. It was a very exciting and rewarding experience to work with a customer so deeply and enthusiastically involved in the garden design and creation process!
The final results were summed up by the client as ‘a blue slate oasis of calm which we love spending time in’.
